Commodore’s Message
Welcome to Penmaenmawr Sailing Clubs 50th Anniversary year and the 2012 handbook. This is my second year as Commodore and what a great honour it is to hold this Office during this very special year. I am looking forward to the challenges of continuing the good work carried out by past Commodores and their Committees in developing the Club into the future.
The success of any club is built on the foundation of its members, and this club is no exception. Penmaenmawr Sailing Club’s continued growth is all down to the enthusiasm and commitment of its members and friends. The Club enjoys a vibrant social scene, and now with our balcony we have doubled our space for socialising.
At Penmaenmawr we are blessed with one of the best and most beautiful sailing beaches in the country, and this played a part in making last year such a successful sailing season. Sunday is our main race day, and this year we have forty race meetings scheduled which should result in over fifty races for the experienced sailors, over three series, a number of Special Open Race Events as well as juniors and ladies races. Our first race meeting is Sunday the 3rd of April.
Our Club has an excellent Junior Section that continues to produce young sailors of high standards. The Club will be running a youth sailing programme on Tuesday evenings throughout the summer. We would appreciate volunteers on these evenings to help with the launching and landing of the boats. Take a look at our Junior Section page further on in this handbook.
I know there wouldn’t be any racing without the commitment of the Race Officers, catering team, safety boat crews, volunteers and friends of the Club, so even if you are not a sailor there is always a way of getting involved with the Clubs activities. We always need help pulling boats across the sand etc. If you fancy getting involved please ask one of the committee members (photos and names over the page).
Over the weekend of June the 9th and 10th of June which is our actual birthday, we will be holding a Special Open Race on the Saturday and Social Celebrations on the Sunday so please put the dates in your diary and join us during the weekend.
Our “Pen WaterFest” is August Bank Holiday weekend. It’s a fantastic open day for landlubbers and non members to enjoy and experience a day of sailing and fun on the waves and hosted by our members. The Annual Community Bonfire night in early November, followed by the Christmas Dinner Dance and Awards Ceremony, round off the Clubs year.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors who have supported the Club over the years, and I encourage you to also support them as a way of thanks.
Please enjoy reading through this years handbook and the contributions from the committee. If you are not already a member and would love to join a friendly club with some of the best sailing waters in Wales, please talk to one of the committee members, or visit the Club’s website and forum which is updated weekly at www.pensailing.co.uk
I look forward to seeing you all soon, both in the Club and best on the water.
